ART × ARCHITECTURE × PLACE : Two Perspectives for Seeing Japan Anew Hyerim studied art in Korea and Japan; Youngdae studied architecture in Korea and the US. After meeting in the unfamiliar city of Tokyo, the two have walked its streets, observed it, and lived in it, each experiencing place in their own way. When art's way of questioning and re-seeing the familiar met architecture's way of examining a place on multiple levels, the scenes they passed by every day began to look a little different. In this talk, they share how living in Japan led them to see everyday life and place anew, and the new aspects they discovered along the way. Along with their own work, we'll look at a range of initiatives in Beppu and Maebashi in Japan, and Daejeon in Korea. Is creating something new the only way to transform cities and regions? Perhaps new possibilities begin with rediscovering what has already been there all along, and seeing its value anew. PART 1|Through what eyes are we seeing Japan?
