BRIEF

*Start with a question! End with one too?

Preservation has long been understood as restoring something to its original state.

Yet what is preserved never stands outside of time. Materials change, environments intervene, and uses and meanings shift.

Almost nothing endures without changing.

So what, then, does preservation keep?

This open call views preservation not as an act of preventing change, but as deciding what to sustain in the midst of change.

One might preserve a form, or a material. One might also preserve a way of use, a memory, a relationship, or even the changing state itself. What matters is what you choose as the object of preservation, and how you give that decision concrete form in your work.

There are no restrictions on subject or medium. Preservation may be interpreted through any field and approach, including architecture, art, and landscape.

Rather than accepting preservation as a fixed concept, this competition seeks proposals that redefine it through each participant's own work.

When we say we are preserving something, what are we actually preserving?

We look at how a work takes up this question, and how precisely that thinking carries through its form, materials, and mode of expression.

REVIEW/ Review

All works are reviewed with applicants' names and personal information removed

The review holistically considers the following:

  • Understanding of the competition theme

  • Interpretation of preservation

  • Clarity of the idea

  • Originality and experimentation in approach

  • Connection between concept and mode of expression

  • Visual, material, and spatial quality of the work

Technically polished imagery is not prioritized in itself.

What matters most is how the work defines preservation, and how consistently and concretely that definition operates throughout the work.
