UK AADRL Computational Design Preview

Cellular Automata–Based Architectural Form-Finding Workshop with Vibe Coding

AADRL

‘AADRL’

Architectural Association Design Research Lab

AADRL is the AA School master's program that has led experimental, computation-based design research for more than 20 years.
Moving across architecture, urbanism, technology, and materials, it experiments with new ways of designing and explores tools, concepts, and fabrication as an integrated whole. Seeing design not as problem-solving but as a process of asking questions, it pursues architectural thinking and methods that respond actively to changing environments.

DRL Phase 1 Design Workshop

Term 1 builds the foundation for experimental thinking, combining physical realization through material experiments and fabrication techniques with computational design approaches using coding and algorithms. The key is to understand systems and variables and to test ideas in both the physical and digital realms.

Experience Computational Design at the AA School (UK) Workshop

This ‘AA School Computational Design Preview’ workshop is based on the AADRL Term 1 computational design workshop. Mentor Hanjun Kim, currently a course tutor at AADRL, personally leads the five-week curriculum over four days.

Workshop Topic

    Form-Finding Process Using Cellular Automata

Cellular Automata is an algorithm that generates complex patterns and forms through the repetition of simple rules. In this workshop, we apply this principle to architectural form finding, experimenting with how small changes can expand into complex spatial structures and formal order.
