UK AADRL Computational Design Preview

Cellular Automata–Based Architectural Form-Finding Workshop with Vibe Coding

AADRL

‘AADRL’

Architectural Association Design Research Lab

AADRL is the AA School's master's program that has led experimental, computation-driven design research for more than 20 years.
Moving across architecture, urbanism, technology, and materials, it experiments with new ways of designing and explores tools, concepts, and fabrication in an integrated way. It approaches design not as problem-solving but as a process of asking questions, pursuing architectural thinking and methods that actively respond to changing environments.

DRL Phase 1 Design Workshop

Term 1 lays the foundation for experimental thinking, combining physical realization through material experiments and fabrication techniques with computational design approaches using code and algorithms. The key is to understand systems and variables, and to test ideas both physically and digitally.

Experience Computational Design at the UK's AA School – Workshop

This ‘UK AA School Computational Design Preview’ workshop is based on the computational design workshop from AADRL Term 1. Mentor Hanjun Kim, a current AADRL Course Tutor, personally leads five weeks' worth of curriculum over four days.

Workshop Topic

    Form-Finding Process Using Cellular Automata

Cellular Automata are algorithms that generate complex patterns and forms through the repetition of simple rules. In this workshop, we apply this principle to architectural form-finding, experimenting with how small changes can expand into complex spatial structures and formal order.
